Abstract
The hindgut epithelium of Saduria entomon infected with Cryptococcus laurentii undergoes structural changes. In cells the apical and basal infoldings disappear. The number of mitochondria drops markedly and those that are left are swollen. Instead, there appear very numerous secondary lysosomes containing cell organelles and myelin-like structures. The presence of C. laurentii cells in the lumen of the hindgut and the intima of the epithelium justifies the assumption that in S. entomon the infection occurs via the hindgut.
