Indirect Relations and Frames: Coreference in Context

Abstract
The main goal of this paper is to analyse coreference in the broader context of semantic and pragmatic relations in Polish discourse. The first section describes problems with the annotation of indirect relations in Polish using a model compiled from previous annotation projects. We focus on the creation of a typology of indirect relations within a discourse. However, while the annotation had revealed many new interesting features of coreference, we noticed that further expansion of relations would hinder the process of annotation. Therefore, a different approach had to be tested. An experiment using frame semantic annotation was then conducted. Frame semantics offers a more integrated view of coreference and other types of semantic and pragmatic concatenations in the world of discourse. Further, using a frame analysis is a very promising method – not only does it widen coreference annotation, but it also predicts the level of text complexity.

- Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu umieszczenie relacji referencyjnych w szerszym kontekście relacji dyskursywnych poprzez próbę anotacji relacji pośrednich w polszczyźnie z wykorzystaniem modelu bazującego na istniejących rozwiązaniach i uzupełnionego o podejście wykorzystujące ramy semantyczne. Pierwsza część tekstu koncentruje się na wypracowaniu typologii relacji pośrednich w dyskursie. Rozwój głębokiej klasyfikacji tego typu relacji prowadzi do wniosku, że dalsze jej rozszerzanie utrudni proces anotacji, wobec czego należy zastosować inne podejście – ram semantycznych. Łączy ono koreferencję i inne rodzaje powiązań semantycznych i pragmatycznych w świecie dyskursu. Metoda analizy ramowej okazuje się obiecująca nie tylko ze względu na poszerzenie anotacji koreferencji, ale także z perspektywy przewidywania złożoności tekstu.
