Abstract

Th e Primate of the Millennium Stefan Wyszyński is considered one of the main architects of Polish-German reconciliation. His undoubted merits also include leading the Polish nation and the Church through the diffi cult times of communism. However, in such key moments as the internment period 1953-1956, the letter of Polish bishops to German bishops and normalization of Church relations in the Western Territories shows that he focused primarily on emphasizing forgiveness. Forgiveness is not reconciliation. To what extent, then, can we talk about the fact that Primate Wyszyński is also a man of reconciliation? Here, the context in which he had to face the building of mutual relations between Poles and Germans is important.
