Central Asia and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI): An Example of International Cooperation or a Tool for Chinese Domination?

Abstract
This chapter draws upon potential consequences of the Belt and Road Initiative, the flagship Chinese project, for Central Asia. The main aim is to find out whether the initiative constitutes a development opportunity or poses a threat to sovereignty and economic independence of states in the region. A number of political and economic aspects of China’s engagement in Central Asia is analysed in detail.
