Abstract
Neutron diffraction measurements carried out with [Mg(NH3)6](NO3)2 powder showed the existence of three solid phases. Phase I is fcc (Fm3m), phase II is primitive cubic (Pa3) and phase III is perhaps orthorhombic. The phase II → phase III transition occurs at about 110 K on cooling. When heating phase III above this temperature, one obtains a metastable phase III which slowly transforms into phase II. INS measurements showed a group of NH3-torsion peaks both in phase II and phase III instead of a single peak. This indicates a lack of NH3 equivalency. QNS measurements showed that NH3 groups are quickly reorienting in phase I and II. In phases I and II. In phase III four out of the six NH3 groups reorient at a slower rate (outside of the neutron "detection window") but two groups perform still a fast reorientation. © 1985.
