Abstract
In Poland industrialization has progressed almost as rapidly as it has in Japan since 1945. Initial nonmetropolitan efforts were concentrated on building the bases for future industrialization: enery and raw materials. More recent nonmetropolitan locations are designed to absorb surplus labor in rural areas. This dimension gives Polish research the distinct character of analyzing the effects of rapid, large-scale industrialization in rural communities. Bivand's presentation examines the institutional framework for research, styles of analysis, and some important issues of concern underlying them. He describes research methods and presents a typoligical sketch of results, and discusses the role of models, theories, and hypotheses in these studies and in the development of the field.-from Preface
