Structural studies of coal extracts

Abstract
The reductive alkylation of a medium-volatile bituminous coal was carried out using potassium and naphthalene in tetrahydrofuran, and using methyl, ethyl and butyl iodides to alkylate the resultant polyanion. The soluble products of the reductive alkylation reaction were isolated by extraction with n-pentane and benzene. The extracts were characterized by i.r. and 1H n.m.r. spectroscopy, molecular mass and ultimate analyses. © 1985.
