Abstract

In this paper I discuss the problem of body adornment vocabulary in the Bulgarian language (permanent make-up, piercing, tattoos). The study focuses on structural and semantic analysis of the Bulgarian expressions and identification of their Polish equivalents. There is an intensive supplementary innovation growth in the semantic area dedicated to body decoration and modification observed in contemporary Bulgarian. This vocabulary abounds in particular with loanwords, including partial substitutions, English borrowings adapted at the phonetic level and hybrid borrowings. Older, native terms compete with the newer ones, frequently of foreign origin, in the language, in favour of the latter. Also a trend to abstract a new group of no-affix compounds with the initial тату- component is noticeable.
