Doświadczenie choroby i śmierci w Listach św. Hieronima

Abstract
The subject of the article is the experience of one's own illness and the death of loved ones on the basis of the epistolary literature of St. Jerome of Stridon (156 Letters). The article consists of two parts. The first one presents Jerome's statements about his own experiences of diseases. Particularly noteworthy is the description of a serious illness that he had gone through in the "Letter to Eustochium, Paula’s daughter". Illness in this case became the beginning of his spiritual transformation. As Jerome got older, he also experienced weaknesses in the body associated with the process of ageing. Therefore, his reflections on old age and accompanying physical ailments are also presented. The second part of the article focuses on Jerome's views on death. They are to be found primarily on the pages of consolation letters, which he wrote after the death of his friends and people close to him. Examples include the following writings: "Letter to Marcella after Leia's death", "Letter to Paula after the death of her daughter Blesila", "Letter to Heliodor after the death of the priest Nepotian". The experience of illness and the awareness of dying were particularly acute in the last years of Jerome's life, although it should be emphasized that he did not dwell too much on the state of his health and did not devote much attention to it in his correspondence. What he underscored was the rapid passing of earthly life and its temporal limitation, pointing out that man was born to die, and the process of physical dying leads to eternal life. Explaining the phenomenon of death, Jerome foregrounded its necessity and the vocation of the Christian to participate in the resurrection of Christ. Death in Jerome's view is the beginning of a new life that is free from suffering and pain and is an eternal reward for the testimony of love for God that man realized during his earthly life.

- Przedmiotem powyższego artykułu jest tematyka doświadczenia własnej choroby i śmierci bliskich osób na podstawie literatury epistolarnej św. Hieronima ze Strydonu (156 Listów). Artykuł składa się z dwóch części. W pierwszej przedstawiono wypowiedzi Hieronima na temat jego własnych chorób, którymi był doświadczony. Na szczególną uwagę zasługuje opis ciężkiej choroby, którą autor przekazał w "Liście do Eustochium córki Pauli". Choroba w tym wypadku stała się początkiem jego duchowej przemiany. Wraz z wiekiem Hieronim doświadczał również słabości ciała związanych z procesem starzenia się. Dlatego w ramach artykułu przedstawiono jego refleksje na temat starości i pojawiających się z nią dolegliwości fizycznych. W drugiej części artykułu ukazano poglądy Hieronima na temat śmierci. Zostały one zawarte przede wszystkim na kartach listów konsolacyjnych, które ten autor pisał po śmierci swoich przyjaciół i bliskich mu osób. Przykładem mogą być następujące pisma: "List do Marceli po zgonie Lei", "List do Pauli po śmierci jej córki Blezyli", "List do Heliodora po śmierci kapłana Nepocjana". Doświadczenie choroby i świadomość umierania były szczególnie trudne w ostatnich latach życia Hieronima, chociaż należy podkreślić, że nie skupiał się on nadmiernie nad stanem swojego zdrowia i nie poświęcał mu w swojej korespondencji zbyt wiele uwagi. Podkreślał on szybkie przemijanie ziemskiego życia i jego czasowe ograniczenie, wskazując że człowiek narodził się po to, aby umrzeć, a proces obumierania fizycznego prowadzi do życia wiecznego. Wyjaśniając fenomen śmierci Hieronim podkreślał jej konieczność oraz powołanie chrześcijanina do udziału w zmartwychwstaniu Chrystusa. Śmierć w ujęciu Hieronima jest początkiem nowego życia, które jest wolne od cierpienia i bólu oraz stanowi wieczną nagrodę za świadectwo miłości wobec Boga, jakie człowiek zrealizował w czasie ziemskiego życia.
