Pochwała nauki w listach Teoderyka Wielkiego do Boecjusza w "Variae" Kasjodora Senatora

Abstract
The study takes up the theme of praise of learning in the letters of the Ostrogoth king Theodoric the Great (493-526) addressed to Boethius, a patrician, which are part of a collection of documents and royal letters written by Cassiodorus Senator and entitled Variae (Collection of Writings). This rich collection consists of 468 documents from the years 489-538 and is divided into 12 books. It contains three letters of the king addressed by name to Boethius, their main theme being recognition of the scholar and information on scientific disciplines (artes). The study consists of three parts. The fi rst presents the role of Cassiodorus, who was the author of Variae, and his contribution to the development of artes liberales. The second part shows the importance of scientific disciplines, while in the last part much attention is paid to the discipline of music (ars musica). The correspondence addressed by King Theodoric shows his love of learning, but also the promotion of scientific disciplines during his reign.

- Powyższe opracowanie podejmuje tematykę pochwały dla nauki w listach ostrogockiego króla Teoderyka Wielkiego (493-526) skierowanych do Boecjusza patrycjusza, które znajdują się zbiorze dokumentów i listów królewskich autorstwa Kasjodora Senatora zatytułowanych Variae (Zbiór pism). Ten bogaty zbiór liczy 468 dokumentów z lat 489-538 i składa się z 12 ksiąg. Znajdują się w nim trzy listy króla skierowane imiennie do Boecjusza, których przewodnią myśl stanowi uznanie dla uczonego męża oraz informacje na temat dyscyplin naukowych (artes). Opracowanie składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej przedstawiono rolę Kasjodora, który był autorem Variae oraz jego wkład w rozwój artes liberales. W drugiej części ukazano znaczenie dyscyplin naukowych, natomiast w ostatniej części wiele uwagi poświęcono dyscyplinie muzyki (ars musica). Korespondencja adresowana przez króla Teoderyka świadczy o jego zamiłowaniu do nauki, ale również o promocji dyscyplin naukowych w okresie jego panowania.
