Abstract
The influence of spin-dependent electron and impurity potentials on transport properties of magnetic layered structures is analysed theoretically. In the current-in-plane geometry the conductivity is calculated within a quantum-mechanical formalism. For currents flowing perpendicularly to layered structures the spin-dependent effective electron potential plays an important role and can generate giant magnetoresistance also when the impurity scattering is spin-independent. Interface resistance for perpendicular transport is calculated in the limit of incoherent scattering by adjacent interfaces. © 1993 IOP Publishing Ltd.
