Abstract

Problem: The main purpose of the publication was to describe the religious identity area. This research dissertation aims to search for correlations between religious identity status, personal identity and selected components of the religiosity of individuals in the period of adolescence, as well as emerging and young adulthood. The target set by this dissertation was the extrapolation of the Erik Erikson’s and James Marcia’s theories for the needs of research, and their development version in the form of the concept of Koen Luyckx and associates. To describe the religious identity area, a new research tool was created – the Religious Identity Scale with 33 items of five dimensions, which was the basis of empirical research. Examined individuals: In studies of a transverse character, three groups were examined in the periods of late adolescence (18 years of age), emerging adulthood (between 19 and 25 years of age) and early adulthood (between 26 and 40 years of age). The measurements were carried out in groups of people closely associated religiously with their church communities and people who were religiously undeclared. The entire research group consisted of 599 people. Results and discussion: Achieved results showed that 84% of examined individuals were still undergoing an identity crisis and did not have a mature religious identity. The religious identity of 22.5% of respondents was indifferent of religion. Only 26% of examined individuals solved their identity crisis in a positive way: this was a group of religiously mature people. Significant difference (p<0.001) was observed in the adolescence, emerging and early adulthood group in three dimensions: exploration in depth (EG), commitment making (CM) and identification of commitment (IC). According to research, the time of solving religious identity crisis is delayed as compared with classic theories of Erick Erikson and James Marcia, to the age of about 26-40 years. Emerging adulthood is a critical period for the development of religious identity. The biggest group of indifferent religious identity was found for people between 19-26 years of age. Personal and religious identities develop together using their own resources and deficits. This is a very important result for pastoral conclusions. People’s formation has to be integral, and should concern not only the personal sphere but mental and religious areas as well. This information is of importance to priests, religious leaders and formators in the seminaries and religious orders. Greater involvement promotes the development of a mature identity. Intensive involvement promotes two statuses: an internalized one and an external one with rumination status of religious identity. The religious involvement of individuals with an indifferent status of religious identity was low or their answer was “lack of involvement”. Mature religious identity, the internalized one, integrates theocentric and anthropocentric spirituality. Religious area and God form the central point of their lives, but personal development is important too. Self-development is more significant for religiously indifferent people and seekers with a ruminative exploration status of religious identity. The level of anthropocentric spirituality is higher than theocentric spirituality. Respondents with an external status of religious identity have got a higher indicator of theocentric spirituality. Women have got a more mature religious identity than man. Their involvement is more intensive, the level of three dimensions: exploration in depth, commitment making and identifi cation of commitment is higher, more woman have got an internalized, and external religious identity. A lot of men are still seekers, probably many of them have not yet resolved their crisis of religious identity.
