Abstract

As institutions of ecclesial life, Councils have always played a signifi cant role in the history of the Church. Despite not being offi cially recorded, the so-called Council of Jerusalem was the meeting place of the Apostles to solve one of the gravest crises of their times on which the success of the mission among pagans depended. It was believed by the Apostles that it was to them that Christ had entrusted the deposit of faith to be guarded, passed on and authoritatively explained. The more important the final decision was to be, the greater emphasis was placed on unanimity. The accompanying reflection was thoroughly theological and it stemmed from the conviction that all bishops were successors of the apostolic college. This publication undertakes a systematic study of the Christology of the first seven ecumenical councils from the First Council of Nicaea in 325 to the Second Council of Nicaea in 787. The study affirms the depth of faith (in its doctrinal dimension) in Jesus Christ in the ancient Church. Bringing together the conciliar rulings, and at the same time a thorough analysis of them, reveals the progressive, unique dynamism of the Church's reflection on the mystery of Jesus Christ, and thus perceives the incomparable richness of the Christological mystery underlying the Church's faith in Jesus Christ.
