### Abstract

Young adults face various social roles and make key life decisions about their objectives, ideals, values and relationships, including a fundamental and binding decision to enter the state of matrimony in the Roman Catholic Church. A person declares an informed consent to ’tie the knot’ with a person of the opposite sex for the rest of their lives, and their relationship is marked by love, faithfulness and responsibility. Presented book seeks to answer the following question: are emerging adults mature enough to tie the sacramental bonds of marriage in accordance with the rules and regulations of a sacrament? The group of respondents consisted of declared candidates for sacramental marriage. The research tools used included the Maturity for Marriage Scale [Polish: Skala Dojrzałości do Małżeństwa (SKLADOM)] (Ryś, 2014), the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS) (Luyckx, Schwrtz, Berzonsky et al., 2008) adapter to the Polish realities by Professor Anna I. Brzezińska’s team (Brzezińska, Piotrowski), the Religious Identity Scale [Polish: Skala Tożsamości Religijnej(STR)](Wieradzka-Pilarczyk, 2015), and the respondents’ multidimensional religious self-declaration. The analysis revealed four groups of people with different identity statuses according to Luyckx et al. 51% of the subjects (160 out of 313) were classified as having Achievement identity status, 2,5% – Foreclosure, 5% – Moratorium with Ruminative Exploration, and 42% – Diffusion (the least mature group). Ruminative Exploration characteristic of those classified as having Moratorium identity status does not help develop a mature attitude to marriage, while the dimension of commitment and identification with the chosen values, ideals and life objectives denotes a mature attitude to the discussed sacrament. In case of those classified as having Diffusion and Indifference identity statuses, there a question arises about their motivation to marry and establish a permanent bond according to the rules set by the Roman Catholic Church, and consequently developing a mature sacramental personality. Only 29% of the candidates for marriage boast a mature and interiorized status of religious identity. As many as 47% of the respondents are not interested in developing their religious lives and are not involved in religion. The remaining group (24%) consists of those who are in quest of their religious identity.
