Abstract

This monograph demonstrates the outcome of the research conducted during the school year 2017/2018 among freshmen and seniors attending high schools and vocational schools located within the area of the archdiocese of Gniezno. The quantitative study done on a representative sample of 1108 respondents aimed primarily at exploring the scope of young people’s recourse to the sacrament of penance and reconciliation, the meaning and role it serves in their lives, and emerging, future trends. A competitive advantage of the research project was it endeavored to identify the impact of a range of factors on the perception and experience of this sacrament by young people – among them were demographic, social and individual factors, such as: age, gender, background and enrolment in religious groups. In the course of the study it was checked to what extent research hypotheses constructed at the beginning, namely that demographic factors, students’ strength of faith and engagement in religious practices influence receiving confession, were valid.The book is divided into five parts. Chapter one provides a theoretical background to the research and discusses theological aspects of the sacrament of reconciliation. The remaining chapters present a comprehensive diagnostic study and demonstrate successively: methodological assumptions of the research project, profile of study participants and their religious behaviors, followed by investigating respondents’ motives behind receiving confession, their established routines connected with penance and the resulting effects they experience. Finally, chapter five seeks to explore the sacrament of conversion in the students’ declarative perspective and investigates a range of issues associated with it, such as: the scope and condition of recourse to confession in the future, disincentives to the sacrament of forgiveness and students’ expectations regarding discussing the sacrament within the framework of religious education at school. The monograph ends with conclusions drawn from the research conducted, some recommendations regarding reviving the use of confession and comments on limitations of the study.The current volume is interdisciplinary – the author resorted to achievements of methodology utilized in social science and statistics research. In order to demonstrate and analyze the collected data, methods used both in descriptive and mathematical statistics were employed. A maximum error of estimation for fractions for all the results was set at the level of 3%. The author drew extensively on the documents of the Teaching Offi ce of the Church, papal statements and rich current literature, mainly from the area of biblical and moral theology, on atonement and the sacrament of reconciliation. Further, references were made to the most recent publications in descriptive statistics with elements of demography and marketing research.The findings of the study encourage reflection – what strikes most is that a significant number of students from the archdiocese of Gniezno never received the sacrament of penance and reconciliation. It has been estimated they constitute 28,76% of the sample – 15,79% of which did not approach confession at all the year preceding the research, whereas 12,97% did not attach any importance to the sacrament, however, at the same time attended it. Likewise, the outcomes have revealed that strong religious beliefs, the living faith of an individual and religious practices are closely associated with all the parameters researched: confession frequency, relevance, value to spiritual life and students’ declarations regarding its future use. An age factor correlation has been identified, showing that once students grow older, their recourse to the sacraments of penance decreases considerably. The research results have demonstrated that while 21,65% of freshmen frequented confession, as few as 10,04% of seniors did the same. In a similar vein, 7,59% of freshmen did not receive the sacrament of conversion versus as many as 21,85% of seniors who did not attend. The fi ndings seem to be alarming – is reaching adulthood related to gradual abandonment of the sacrament?In view of the fi ndings presented, both priests and lay religion teachers must realize that their main responsibility is to revive faith in young people and encourage them to deepen it. It is only the living faith that contributes to the faithful Christians’ penitential practice and renders them to assign high value to it. This demands, however, that the Church give a clear testimony of faith and live an exemplary Christian life on a daily basis. In addition, both clergymen and lay religion teachers should get involved in the religious education process. The author hopes that only a comprehensive diagnosis regarding such a delicate, sensitive and overarching issue as young people’ attendance to the sacrament of forgiveness may help design feasible and effective solutions serving the purpose of reviving confession not only by the younger generation of Christ followers, but also adult members of the Church.
