Anti-Semitism in the Kingdom of Poland. The Origin and Evolution of the Modern Anti-Jewish Ideology

Maciej Moszyński

Abstract

In my dissertation I attempted to analyze the origin and development of anti-Semitic ideology in the Kingdom of Poland in the period between the decline of the January Uprising and the outbreak of the First World War. My aim is to research the character of this process and the role which the social and political circles of anti-Jewish oriented authors has played in his formation. The representatives of this circles expressed their opinion on the Jews, “Jewish question” and anti-Semitism especially in the polish press. Through analyzing of this discussions it was possible to answer the question on the specificity of polish ideological anti-Semitism and to verify the hypothesis that there was few anti-Semitic “theorists” in this part of Europe. In my thesis I focus less on the reconstruction of specific forms of ant-Jewish activity. I try to give details on realization of the theoretical proposals in the form of the social, political and economic initiatives. I describe the representations and stereotypes which provided the basis of statements and political proclamations of polish anti-Semites. I also put emphasis on the problem of the reception, evolution and dissemination of anti-Semitic motifs and toposes presented in this statements.
