Poetry and War: Works by Soldier-Poets from the Period Between 1805 and 1830 (Between the Polish Legions and the November Uprising)

Łukasz Słaby

Abstract

The aim of my dissertation is to examine the literary works related to the Polish military effort between 1805 and 1835. I am interested in the relations between the poetry and the war. I want to examine them, analyzing the works by selected poets who actively participated in the military action at the beginning of the 19th century. In my dissertation I was concerned with the works of writers who actively participated in the Napoleonic Wars (Cyprian Godebski, Andrzej Brodziński, Wincenty Reklewski, Kazimierz Brodziński) as well as in the November Uprising (Stefan Garczyński, Wincenty Pol). I attach equal importance to the time between these crucial events of the first half of the 19th century, i.e. to the period of the Congress Poland (1815-1830). The Congress of Vienna was proceeded by an event crucial for the Poles – the year 1812 and Napoleon’s defeat in the invasion of Russia. Outright majority of the literary testimonies that I have dealt with in my dissertation are poetical works of different artistic merit and of different length. The two factors that constitute their uniqueness are the authors’ direct involvement in the military events and their irresistible need to preserve this experience in literature.
