Parental attitudes and reflectiveness of mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders

Paulina Gołaska

Abstract

Reflectiveness is an ability to identify and regulate emotional processes in self and others in order to understand and anticipate own and others’ behaviors. The aim of this study was to assess the level of negative parental attitudes and reflectiveness of mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), as well as to verify whether there is a relation between reflectiveness and parental attitudes. The results did not confirm the validity of proposed model. Mothers of children with ASD did not show more negative parental attitudes towards their children, as well as were not less reflective than mothers of children without ASD. The results even suggested that mothers of children with ASD may be more reflective than control mothers. The key mental state for those mothers was anxiety about the child. This emotion, as well as joy in relationship with the child, feelings of loss of the child, pain in relationship with the child and mother’s neediness, was the hardest to reflect on. What is more, mothers of children with ASD showed lower level of reflectiveness due to their own mental states than due to mental states of their children. Presumably, exploration of emotional experiences of motherhood of mothers of children with ASD may improve their reflectiveness on both, own and child’s mental states. This suggests that reflective support offered by professionals to mothers of children with ASD may have therapeutic value for children with autism spectrum disorders.
