## The functioning of families separated due to labour migration of one of the parents

### Anna Wallentin

#### Abstract

The subject of both theoretical analysis and empirical research of the thesis is the functioning of families separated from one of the parents due to labour migration. The aim was not to show the phenomenon of migration as something positive or negative; it was rather to present opportunities and threats to families temporarily divided by labour migration. The attention is focused on the realization of four functions of family: economic function, service and care function, emotional and expressive function as well as the socializing and educational function, which were selected from a number of others by assuming that they are central for the living conditions and growth of children and youth. It has been decided to describe the realization of the abovementioned functions in divided families, to point out changes as well as potential difficulties that may arise during their realization and ways of dealing with these difficulties. Furthermore, assuming that the functioning of a divided family depends on the duration of migration it has also been decided to explore this relationship. Labour migration of one of the parents usually is a strategy to make a better living. This could be also confirmed by this study because the majority of evaluated families noticed an improvement in their family's financial situation since one of the parents started working abroad. However, it turns out that migration is not automatically to be associated with changes in other areas of family life. The results related to the implementation of the other functions of family are good examples of that, which in this case may be related to the mother orientated profile of the surveyed families.
