### Piotr Małyszko

#### Abstract

In 1989 started great, economic and social political changes. A monopoly of the power of the communist party was abolished, a political pluralism was implemented as well as construction of the capitalist economy was begun. Thanks to a system transformation Poland became the democratic state. Polish regional press, and the two Białystok daily newspapers ranked among this group - "Gazeta Współczesna" and "Kurier Podlaski", played a minor role in the monopolistic press system of the state before the system transformation. In 1991 they already had new owners, and became an important source of information of north-east part of Poland. They also builded the modern local community. They had to however fight over the reader with "Kurier Poranny” which appeared at the beginning of 1990. This dissertation contains the results of the press studies of the process of transformation in the 1989-1991 years. The studies covers the contents of the regional newspapers appearing in Białystok during this period. Process of transformation was an object of the permanent interest of these daily newspapers. On their pages they showed political, economic, social and cultural changes, that occurred both in three provinces: Białystok, Łomża, Suwałki, as well as in entire Poland in 1989-1991 years. The image of the system transformation in regional newspapers is unusually interesting, because newspapers did not only described this important process, but also were subject to it.
