Properties and photocatalytic activity of mesoporous materials modified with titanium ions
Andrzej Mikołajczak
Abstract
Mesoporous material SBA-15 has been modified with titanium ions by seven different methods. The amount of introduced TiO₂ was in the range between 8 wt.% and 24 wt.%. The physicochemical measurements has shown that the blocking of the channels did not occur even if there was high loading of TiO₂ (24wt.%). Different types of modification methods led to different form of TiO2 inside the channels of SBA-15 or insertion of Ti ions in to structure of mesoporous material. Hydrothermal stability in stem at high temperature (373K to 973K) of pure SBA-15 and modified with foreign ions has been tested. This measurement showed that presence of foreign ions weaken the structure of material only if they are build inside the wall structure of SBA-15 otherwise structure is strengthen. The photodecomposition of methyl orange in aqueous medium was selected as probe reaction to test the photoactivity of the titania-SBA-15 powders and to verify the potential use of these material for wastewater treatment. Potential use of titania-SBA-15 powders in hydrogen generation was tested as well. The obtained photocatalysts were tested in photocatalytic decomposition of water in presence of methanol as sacrificing agent. It was shown that the preparation method and the structural characteristics of mesoporous materials are of great importance for the photocatalytic activity.- Record ID
