Przemysław Mańka

Abstract

The target of this dissertation is impressionist and subjective attempt to look on the life and work of forgotten drama writer and novelist – Janusz Teodor Dybowski (1909-1977). Through the historical events in Poland and Europe of that time, the researcher analyses and evaluates Dybowski’s literature achievements, so deeply depended on the cultural politics direction of the contemporary government. Aiming to settle the Dybowski achievements in the right place of the XXth century literature, the thesis author provides the reader with the novelist’s mid-war theatre trials, the cultural activities of emigration years, including the one in the camp for the interned soldiers during the Nazi occupation, and the activity of realistic drama and historical novel of People’s Poland period. The thesis proves that Dybowski, just as many of the Polish intelligence representatives, believing in illusive promises of socialism, was a slow propaganda instrument, what consequently made an impressive impact on his literature, and contenporary to that times, poor reception. The dissertation is the first one of such wide scope about the author, details its biography with crucial and not known so far facts.
