Ornamentation of dermal bones of vertebrates from Triassic deposist of Krasiejów – taxonomical and ecological implications

Mateusz Antczak

Abstract

Manuscript contains the description of dermal bones (isolated fish scales and pectoral girdle and skull of Temnsopondyli amphibians) from Late Triassic fine-grained deposits of Krasiejów (Opole voivodship). Aim of the study is the ornamentation of the mentioned bones – ridges, tubercules, grooves, etc. Character of the ornamention served for taxonomical and ecological analysis (inter and intraspecific variation). Macroscopic as well as microscopic observations were made, including scanning electron microscopy for high magnification. In case of amphibian bones chemical (EDS) and histological analysis were made. Variety of the ornamentation of fish scales allows to disctinct: at east two species of ganoid fish, at least two (possibly four) species of dipnoan fish, at least two fish with ctenoid scales, including the oldest known acanthopterygians. Variety of the ornamentation of amphibian dermal bones allows to distinct two ecological populations of Metoposaurus krasiejowensis (more aquatic, ‘pond-type’ and more terrestrial, ‘stream-type’). One of the specimens allows to conclude that larval amphibians lived in close proximity of adult specimens.
