Abstract

Józef Olszyna-Wilczyński was born 28th November 1890 in Zwierzyniec (district of Cracow). He was a student of Lvov Technical University and a member of organization called Polskie Drużyny Strzeleckie. In August 1914 he had to serve in Austro-Hungarian Army but he found his place in 1st Brigade of Polish Legions. He took part in all the most important battles. In that time he adopted a nick-name “Olszyna” which became part of his surname. As he refused to take an oath in 1917 he was transferred to the Austro-Hungarian Army and sent to Italy. In November 1918 he joined the Polish Army. He took part in the Polish-Ukrainian War and in the Polish-Russian War in 1920. Next he served in Cracow as head of engineer department of 5th Military Area Department later - in Polish Ministry of Military Affairs in Warsaw and in Polish Border Corps as commander of Brigade. In 1927 he graduated from the Center for Higher Military Education in Warsaw, and was promoted to the first general degree. Next he was the commander of 10th Infantry Division in Lodz, later - Director of National Office of the Phisical Education and Military Training in Warsaw, in the end he became head of 3rd Mil-itary Area Department in Grodno. In September 1939 he prepared defence the part North-West front near Suwałki, Wizna and Biebrza river. He was responsible for evacuation soldiers. After Soviet aggression he got an order of evacuation and he left Grodno. He travelled with his wife and aide-de-camp captain M. Strzemeski. They tried to reach the Polish-Lithuanian border and cross it. They were stopped by the Russian tank staff. The officers were shot.
