Abstract

The professional learning community is growing and developing in a variety of professions and in different ways around the world. In the past two decades in the education system there are also learning communities of teachers as a part of the school culture and the track of teacher professional development. This research study addresses the issue of the professional development of mathematics teachers in elementary schools in Israel who have participated in a professional learning community, with focus on the model of peer learning according to the lesson study model in the process. The objectives of the research study were to identify the teaching-learning processes that contribute to the knowledge and skills of teachers who belong to the professional learning community and to examine the influences of peer learning on the professional and personal development of the teachers in the community according to the lesson study model. The theoretical part includes four main chapters. professional development of teachers and the school as a learning organization ,characteristics of the professional learning community and describes its contribution and the challenges ,peer learning, and lesson study model as a tool for the professional development of mathematics teachers. The researcher chose to carry out a qualitative research study, with emphasis on ethnography, in the spirit of the constructivist paradigm.
