Woman - Church - State. Cults of saints in the literature of Serbian Orthodox Church

Dominika Gapska

Abstract

The doctoral thesis entitled “Woman - Church - State. Cults of saints in the literature of Serbian Orthodox Church” focuses on the description of the cults of female saints in the Serbian Orthodox Church and their place in religious, cultural, social and political life of the Serbs. The thesis presents the most characteristic female saints for the ‘national’ Serbian spirituality. It shows the cults of national saints in the historical-literary context, with the emphasis on the most important periods and the most important events in the history of Orthodox Slavs. It attempts to reconstruct the causes of cults’ transformations in the face of the changing situation of the country and the different stages of societal development. The revision of the old female cults played (and still plays) an important role in modern religious and political contexts. The study fills the gap in the state of knowledge in Slavic Studies about the sanctity of women. In the wider sense, the dissertation contributes to a better understanding of the Balkan Orthodoxy, and thus it complements the knowledge on the European culture and tradition with the Eastern component.
