The province as a problem of the post-colonial narrative’ in work of Andrzej Stasiuk's, Wolfgang Hilbig's and Jurij Brezan's

Emilia Kledzik

Abstract

The submitted paper is a comparative study of a literary image of Provence in Sorbian, East German and Polish literature from the times of political transformation basing on the example of Jurij Brĕzan’s, Wolfgang Hilbig’s and Andrzej Stasiuk’s writings. The “toposless topos” of the province, which plays a double role in European literature: of a national microcosm, and modernity’s criticism figure, has become for serbo-lusitian national minority, East German quasi-nation and a postsoviet project of Central Europe a symbol of the political breakthrough times. Postcolonial methodology allows to present in selected cultural areas different phenomena, related to the “colonization”: regarding Russia/the USSR, local and global colonization acts and ressentiment distinctive for the breakthrough’ literatures related to the Western Europe. In the literatures the following aspects are being examined: the relation between the narrative and the described geographical area (geopoetics), the esentialisation’ and orientalisation’ strategies and the variety of postcolonial figures (mimicry, ambivalence, hybrydisation, carnivalisation). The postcolonial lecture reveals none of the described provinces overcomes the anticolonial or colonial ways of presenting space, basing on the opposition between the colonizer and the colonized.
