Anna Skowronek
Abstract
Poles settled in the multi-ethnic areas of Bessarabia for many years, from 1812 up to the year 1918. In this period, in this part of the Russian Empire settled totally about 20,000 people of Polish nationality. They came in a few phases and they had a few basic reasons for that, but for all the main purpose was to improve the living conditions. The majority of Polish settlers sought to adapt. We can point a number of different ways to integrate with society of Bessarabia. Very important was to keep Polish national identity, which was connected with several factors, mainly the Catholic faith. Studies of the history of Polish settlement in the Russian Bessarabia should show different aspects of the integration of Poles in exile and the various ways of their adaptation to changing conditions in the place of residence. It is also important to show, how the structure of the nineteenth-century settlement influenced on the current deployment of the Polish minority in Moldova. Poles of the nineteenth century became an example of steadfastness Polish spirit in times of oppression. They are an important role model for descendants now living in the Republic of Moldovy because it could unite and work together to preserve their identity.
