The quarrel about Ecclesia sancta in Africa according to the latin patristic testimonies from III and IV century

Wojciech Prus OP

Abstract

We describe the quarrel about the holiness of the Church in the III and IV c. According to the third article of the Creed, the holiness was seen in the relation to the Holy Spirit. It is possible to indicate two aspects of the holiness: the moral one (the presence of a sinner in the Church) and the ontological one (the presence of the Holy Spirit in the Church). We present the evolution of the church’s view on this problem, comparing the time of persecution and the time of peace in the African Christianity, where the problem was conditioned by the high view of martyrdom. The first controversy appears in the way of seeing the sinner’s presence, during the catholic and montanist period of Tertulian’s work. The consequence of the change of his mind is the moral model of the holiness of the Church. In the second quarrel, the relation Holy Spirit – Church is seen in the controversy about the validity of the heretical baptism. The Pope’s Stephen view announces the change of viewing the holiness of the Church from the Pneumatological perspective to the Christological one. The Cyprian’s of Carthage institutional vision puts the accent on the ontological aspect, describing the border of the presence of the Holy Spirit. The moral aspect could be seen in the way of treating the lapsed during the persecution. The third quarrel it is Optat from Milevi and his dispute with the Donatists, who mixing the two holiness, accused the Catholics of losing the Holy Spirit and the Church. Referring to the Christological perspective, he puts the holiness of the Church in the Sacraments, making it independed of the man and showing in the penance the place for a sinner in the Holy Church.
