Provincial Office of Public Security in Poznań 1945-1954. Its formation – structure – operating activity

Abstract

The author analyzed the operations of the regional security apparatus in Poznań from 1945 to 1954. The thesis features five chapters. Chapter 1 presents the security service formation process and structure; chapter 2 discusses its operation principles. Staff employment, training and disciplining are discussed separately. Chapter 4 presents the cooperation of the security apparatus with the communist party, militia and the NKVD. Most space is devoted to the service’s operations, discussed in chapter 5. The author analyzed counterintelligence at the regional level, actions with regard to Germans living in Poland, and to prominent Polish independence fighters. Case studies illustrating how the security service infiltrated and dismantled independence units are presented as well. The author discusses the effect of the security service on social and political life, surveillance of and repressions against Poznań intelligentsia, Catholic clergy and congregations and members of other religious groups. Similarly, the author discusses the operations of the security apparatus in the area of the state agricultural policy, operations with regard to farmers and workers criticizing the economic transformations in Poland. In the Annex the author presents bio notes about the leaders of Provincial Office of Public Security in Poznań, a map and selected photographs.
