Cooccurrence, syntagmatic patterns and lexicographic presentation of light verb constructions German-Polish comparison

Łukasz Piątkowski

Abstract

The aim of the dissertation is to analyse German light verb constructions, it means verb-noun combinations (often occurring with a preposition) such as zur Aufführung bringen, einen Antrag stellen, podjąć decyzję or wejść w życie and their Polish equivalents. The choice of units to be analysed is based on the work of Alain Kamber and concerns light verb constructions with the verbs bringen, kommen and sich befinden. The analysis consists of three stages: the analysis of cooccurrence, the determination of syntagmatic patterns, i.e. patterns of use of a given light verb construction, and the analysis of four German-Polish dictionaries, including dictionaries published by PONS, Wiedza Powszechna and PWN, with regard to possible equivalents in Polish and morphosyntactic, semantic and pragmatic information contained in the dictionary microstructure. The analysis is corpus-based and it based on the German Reference Corpus DeReKo and the National Corpus of Polish NKJP as well as applications Comas II and Kolokator. The research provides a starting point for further analyses of contrastive multiword units, may be the basis for the creation of textbooks and didactic materials and shows the potential of using corpora in lexico-grammar analysis.
