Development of intercultural competence in job-related foreign language teaching. Evaluation of selected textbooks for GFL lessons in Poland

Abstract

The present doctoral thesis raises a subject of the development of intercultural competence in vocational-oriented foreign language education in Poland. The main aim is to present the extent to which the content of selected textbooks for learning German as a foreign language can support intercultural education in vocational schools such as technical colleges. The contents of three series of textbooks for teaching general German, i.e. “Genau!”, “Meine Welttour” and “Infos” were analyzed as well as three series of materials for teaching a professional foreign language, i.e. “Deutsch für Profis”, “Mit Beruf auf Deutsch” and “Infos zum Beruf”. Additionally, the empirical part of the thesis presents the results of a questionnaire conducted among student from two Poznań technical schools. The aim of this part was to examine the extent to which the basic assumptions of intercultural education are implemented during German language lessons. The empirical part ends with the analysis of interviews with textbook authors on the role of these teaching materials in supporting the development of intercultural competence. The theoretical part presents the following issues: the importance of the German language in the world, vocational-oriented teaching of a foreign language, the definition of intercultural competence, the characteristics of intercultural teaching and the role of textbooks in foreign language education.
