Polish language in films as artistic value. Stylistic-lingual strategies in the work of selected auteur cinema representatives
Małgorzata Miławska-Ratajczak
Abstract
The dissertation’s attempt to analyse and interpret pieces of dialogues excerpted out of the material base – that is 41 cinematic fictional films of five Polish directors – illustrates that not only film dialogue may be put under lingual analysis, but is also a subtype of artistic language that is interesting for stylistic research. Limiting the material by choosing only cinema pieces that were made by representatives of auteur cinema – J. Machulski, M. Koterski, J.J. Kolski, W. Pasikowski and W. Smarzowski – which not only directed the movies, but also wrote, or co-wrote, their scripts, or at least authored their dialogues, enabled to prove the claim that on the verbal layer, one can find reflection of each of the authors’ recognizable traits. The verbal layer of the film can be equally important element of auteur strategy as every other element of the composition, as it, too, is subject to creative actions. In the dissertation, a representative review of auteur techniques of shaping the Polish language was made. The theoretical groundwork of this dissertation has been reviewed in chapters I and II, while detailed results of the analysis, i.e. the description of the films’ idiostyle’s artistical indicators (stylistic-lingual strategies) as important components of autheur strategies can be found in chapters III to VII.- Record ID
