Jewish cultural renaissance in the Polish-Jewish press 1918-1939

Marta Drażyńska

Abstract

The scope of the hereby study is the reconstruction of the traces of the Jewish cultural renaissance that appeared in the Polish-Jewish press during the Interwar period. I focused on a couple of Polish-language Jewish daily newspapers like “Chwila”, “Nowy Dziennik”, "Nasz Przegląd”, weekly “Opinia” and monthly “Miesięcznik Żydowski”, where I was researching how the vision of new Jewish culture was being established. Based on theories of ninetieth century national movements in Europe I was analyzing creation of myths on which national community was based. I was asking about the role of religion in this new secular, cultural project but also investigating historical narration. This work deals also with question of Jewish national language which was the outcome of former, so called Jewish languages war. Finally, I asked how Jewish literary canon was created showing that the ideology was one of the major issues that dominated Jewish literature at that time. A final chapter of my study describes poetry and role of the national poet Chaim Nachman Bialik. It is focused on how the myth of the national poet was born. History of translation of Bialik’s poetry into Polish reveals the meaning and the crucial role of translations in promoting the idea of Jewish Cultural Renaissance among Jewish community in Poland. It also shows how literary translations contributed to the creation of the Jewish literary canon. It appears that language, ideology and national identity dominated the newborn Jewish literature and press in interwar Poland.
