Images of music in the works of Janina Kraupe-Świderska
Beata Niklewicz
Abstract
The thesis analyses musical inspirations in the works of Janina Kraupe-Świderska (1921-2016). Graphic art and oil paintings whose titles related to music were selected for the analysis. The methodological strategy used is the Iconic of Max Imdahl, situated within the field of hermeneutics. The thesis presents a diachronic view of the relationship of painting and music throughout the ages. It also contains a research review, emphasising the viewpoints of art historians, philologists and musicologists. The motivation for using the iconic method for analysing paintings of music was given from the perspective of the iconic reference and the related ontology of the artwork. Various threads permeating over 70 years of the creative output of Kraupe-Świderska were presented in a contextual view, preceded by bibliographical information. A synchronic analysis was undertaken, looking for sources of the artist's inspiration among the most important contemporary threads in the history of art and music. The reflections on paintings of music are complemented by the artist's autocommentary. More in-depth analyses were devoted to the works inspired by the music of Bach, Chopin and Penderecki. The appendices contain a catalogue of the artist's paintings of music, an interview and a research report on the relations of music and the visual arts in Polish lessons in primary and secondary schools.- Record ID
