Specific evangelization activity of the Roman-Catholic Church in Kazakhstan in 1936 – 1990

Błażej Michalewski

Abstract

The main purpose of the paper was to show specific circumstances encountered by the evangelization activity of the Roman-Catholic Church in Kazakhstan. In order to fully demonstrate the context of that activity, the introduction makes a reference to the legal situation of the Church in the Soviet Union as well as the anti-religion and atheistic activity carried out by the Soviets. The specific evangelization activity was also affected by repressions inflicted on both clergymen and laymen who were engaged in the Church’s life. While discussing the condition of the Catholic Church in Kazakhstan, the addressees of the evangelization message are presented. These were people sent into exile in 1936 and deported in the 1940s to Kazakhstan as well as next generations already born and raised in Soviet Kazakhstan. The next part presents evangelization activists including clergymen, nuns and laymen. The last chapter depicts main forms of the Church’s evangelization activity. It mentions personal prayer and also meetings in private homes. It describes the process of establishing legal parishes and related difficulties. As regards the Church activity a reference is made to sacraments offered and celebration of funeral rites. The engagement of both the clergymen and laymen helped the Catholic Church in Kazakhstan survive and grow until 1990 which was the last year of Kazakhstan as a republic of the Soviet Union.
