The New Woman phenomenon in Polish literature, women’s magazines and critical literary journalism before 1939 (in reference to English contexts)
Marta Wiatrzyk-Iwaniec
Abstract
The aim of this PhD dissertation is a reconstruction of the New Woman figure in Polish literature and press that appeared before 1939 in reference to English writings. The transition from the 19th century into the 20th century was characterized by the great social, political and moral upheaval in Polish culture, which resulted in new models and projects of femininity. One of them was the New Woman who stood in opposition to the angel in the house. The former was perceived as rebellious whereas the latter was seen as submissive and obedient. My dissertation is composed of four parts. The first one is devoted to the definition of the New Woman on the basis of English writings. In the second part of my dissertation I examine the presence of the New Woman figure in Polish press addressed to women and the way it was acknowledged by the critical world. The last two parts of my thesis focus on the representation of the New Woman figure, motives, themes and problems in Polish literature. According to the title of the dissertation, English New Woman novels are discussed in the paper and serve as a reference to Polish writings.- Record ID
