Political and religious views of Marsilio from Padua

Anna Jaroszewska

Abstract

Since eleventh century medieval philosophy had dealt with problems associated with the government, organisation of the state and nation, relations between secular and the Church authority. Investiture Controversy had significant impact on the development of political thought. This dispute was transformed into a struggle for political power, lasting almost until the end of the Middle Ages. Conflict which involved many of the eminent representatives of the “medieval mind” created a political treatises which were attempt to create original concepts of authority and the state. The topic of my research is, therefore, the concept of Marsilio of Padua, concluded in his treatise - The Defender of Peace. The main aim of my PhD thesis is to present the views of Padewczyk based on the fourteenth century political concepts, created in times of dispute between the secular and the spiritual power for sake of domination. Such an approach to Marsilio’s works allowed me to present not only the development of medieval political thought, but also show how very original and different from other political writers were Padewczyk’s proposals. Marsilio’s considerations I want to compare are the political ideas of Dante, who was a source of clear inspiration for Padewczyk. The Defenders of Peace can safely be called a continuation and to some extend evolution of Dante’s views. I will also present the characteristics of the synthetic reception of The Defenders of Peace in later centuries, showing how much perception of the Treaty has changed and the evaluation of its importance for the development of political thought in general.
