Multimodal message coherence on the example of live report
Agata Karaśkiewicz
Abstract
In spite of extensive investigation of coherence in text and discourse, a comprehensive model of coherence mechanisms in the production and perception of multimodal communicates has not emerged so far. In the present work, an adaptation of Event Indexing Model by Zvaan and Radvansky (1998) is proposed for a particular type of communicate, i.e. a short live television report. The approach of Zvaan and Radvansky is discussed in detail and extended with components necessary for its application to such a communicate. In further steps, own empirical research is described in which reactions of viewers to various types of coherence distortions in short live reports were studied. Incoherencies were deliberately introduced in the material specifically produced for the purpose of this study. A more precise understanding of multimodal coherence in media communicate is proposed along with its theoretical frames and methods of measurement. This approach encompasses both the process of production and perception as well as interpretation by the addressee. It can find applications in the analysis of perception of television programmes but also in the process of their production.- Record ID
