Jean Vanier – "A formation concept of the assistants for intellectually disabled people”

Janusz Tomczak

Abstract

The situation of people with intellectual disabilities is exceptionally complicated due to: unclear etymology of disabilities, mental, physical and spiritual capabilities and prognosis. Therefore, a very valid question arises how to prepare these people who are to take care about a mentally retarded person? Jean Vanier, a founder of Faith and Light and L'Arche Community Movements, has made the attempt in order to solve this issue. This has been reflected in the work by Jean Vanier – "A formation concept of the assistants for intellectually disabled people”. In his publications, Jean Vanier points out that the formation of the assistant for people who have intellectual disabilities results in caring about them and building a friendship, and the communion indeed. The people who are appointed for this purpose as well as intellectually disabled persons themselves may be formateurs. Preparation of assistants involves human, Christian and commune formation and is realised through intellectual, spiritual shaping and through accompanying the intellectually disabled person. The aim is to endow one another and to transfer from taking all actions for intellectually disabled people to being present with them. This can be achieved by membership in the community, as well as though camps, retreat and formation weekends. When developing, the assistant encounters obstacles due to psychical-social conditions, imperfect religious development or selective approach to the formation process, both in terms of its content and form. The conclusions as discussed in this thesis comprise the attempt to present Jean Vanier’s concept of the formation of assistants.
