Trials of persons accused of committing Nazi crimes in the so-called "Warthegau" before Polish special courts in 1945 to 1946

Abstract

In this dissertation, the author attempts to present the entire issue of criminal liability of persons accused of Nazi crimes in the so-called "Warthegau" before Polish special courts in 1945 to 1946. Dissertation consists of six chapters. Chap. I shows development of the legal basis of accountability for war crimes. Chap. II on selected examples discusses trials of people accused of Nazi crimes committed in the so-called "Warthegau". This chapter covers such issues as: general characteristics of the so-called "Warthegau", analysis of selected trials, a list of all trials in the form of tables and summaries placed on maps of the so-called "Warthegau", analysed course of trials, as well as the judiciary and prosecutorial personnel taking part in the hearings. Chap. III is devoted to the process of Arthur Greiser. Volume II in chap. IV-VI includes biographies of people accused of Nazi crimes in the discussed area and tried by special criminal courts in 1945 to 1946. In the dissertation biographies are shown in territorial arrangement (first counties, and then under them districts). The discussed issues are enriched with iconographic material in the form of numerous pictures, tables, list of abbreviations, bibliography and maps. Annexes contain the acts underlying the prosecution and punishment of war criminals.
