Project-oriented teaching and learning German as a foreign language in the German-Polish border region. Example of the Euroregion Pro Europa Viadrina

Tomasz Lis

Abstract

The aim of the following paper is to study the use of the project method in the learning process at school on the middle and upper secondary level of the contemporary Polish educational system (as of 2015). The considerations about the classical project method, the attempts to classify its particular components and the empirical supported characteristics of its didactic implementation in curricular and extracurricular context create hereby the background for the main part of the paper. The focus of interest here is the proposal of the presence of region-oriented topics in the German courses at Polish schools, and its didactic realization forms supported by the elements of the project method. The presence of region-oriented topics was analysed in the ministerial recommendation [Polish: podstawa programowa] (2012) with regard to the selected school subjects. By including the region as an educational landscape, the concept of teaching and learning German as a foreign language at school can be definitely increased by further intercultural contents. This is significant, especially in the German-Polish border region which offers a wide range of possibilities and ideas for didactical inclusion of regional elements in the field of teaching and learning a foreign language, especially through its intercultural profile and numerous historical, political, economic, social, or cultural etc. connection points between Germans and Poles.
