"Violence of showing" in the films of David Fincher
Małgorzata Choczaj
Abstract
The subject of this dissertation is analysing David Fincher's film work from the point of view of “show violence” (which is a term proposed by Werner Faulstich) [Filmästhetik. Untersuchungen zum Science Fiction-Film „Kampf der Welten” (1953/54) von Byron Haskin (Tübingen 1982)] as a feature of the film medium understood not as acts of brutality in the ethical and moral sense, but as a way of forming the film matter by the originator, i.e. the director. The tools which allow studying violence in that sense are interdisciplinary references to the film technique as well as research into creation and reception of a work of art. This thesis refers to various aspects of showing violence in different perspectives. In the area of microstructure it is showing violence on the mise-en-scène level, also that of shot composition, cutting, the motion of the camera, the sound, music, colour and light. As far as macrostructure is concerned, the way of the director's shaping the narrative structure of the film, the narrator's function and the time are considered. The last part of this work is an analysis of the director's style, which might be characterised e.g. by oscillating between distancing and emotional engagement, using various media (television, radio, photography etc.) in films in order to transmit information about the action and characters, also using the newest achievements of film technique so as to gain the best quality of the image and sound.- Record ID
